Path Finder - Software (APPL)

Looking for an alternative to the default Finder for Mac OS? Well, look no further and check out Path Finder. It is a powerful file manager offering more features and enhancements than the standard Mac OS' Finder. Below is a list of features which Path Finder have to offer:

Advanced Selection

Advanced Selection is a feature which allows the user to select and make filter selection of multiple files based on file name, extension, attributes, and date. These selections can be further extended with filters such as "contains", "starts with", "ends with", ignore case, and much more. Practical use of this feature becomes handy for quickly selecting and filtering out hundreds or thousands of files within a folder.

Batch Renaming

Path finder comes with a batch renaming utility. This basic feature is convenient for quickly and easily process the renaming of multiple files compare to tediously renaming files manually one by one. The batch renaming includes some of the following options: replace text with text, replace regex, insert text, change case, add number sequence, add date, apply to, case sensitive, add suffix, add prefix, renaming result preview, and more.

Browser Tabs & Bookmarks

For those who are still using Mac OS X prior to the Mavericks edition, having Path Finder will provide your system with Browser Tabs and Bookmarks capability. Instead of opening multiple folders in multiple Finder windows, Path Finder is designed with browser tabs (also with dual pane capability as discussed further below) for optimizing single window use; eliminating the clutter of overlapping windows. In addition, the built in bookmarking feature allows quick access to your most frequently used folders.

Calculate File Checksums

Many computer users are unaware of what file checksum is, but should at least understand the basic purpose of calculating the file checksum of a file. This will not be fully discussed here as a lot of information regarding file checksum is readily available on the internet. However, in simple terms, this built in feature allows the user to calculate the hash data of a particular file for the end user to manually verify the integrity of a file with the source hash data (supplied by the creator of the file) to ensure its authenticity and that it had not been tampered with. Executable files that have different hash data from the one supplied by the creator of the file are either corrupted or had been compromised with malicious codes that can infect a computer system.

Drop Stack

Drop Stack is a temporary stack area on Path Finder were files and folders can be temporarily stored by dragging and dropping files and folders to the stack area icon without moving the actual files and folders from the original location. Drop Stack does support dropping and dragging files from multiple directories. Once the files and folders are placed at the stack area, collectively, those files and folders can be relocated to a new directory, compressed, or burned to a compact disc.

Dual-Pane

Having dual pane windows makes working with files much easier and faster. It combines comfort, speed, and power by viewing the contents of two folders side by side.

Editable Path Navigator

Sometimes you are given a very long path to where the location of a folder is. Instead of tracing through the folders manually one by one to get to the end folder, you can paste the entire path into Path Finder's navigator and it will take you there immediately. A very simple feature but very handy.

FolderSync

Routine back ups of important files and folders are always essential. As file and folder count increases, they become more difficult to manage. Sometimes you may lose track of which files have been modified, which ones are new, and which ones have or have not been backed up. With FolderSync, it can help reduce this headache. FolderSync will perform a file and folder comparison between two folders as specified by the end user. Once comparison is complete, the user can select to proceed with the following synchronizing operations: Update Left, Update Right, Update Both, Mirror to Left, Mirror to Right. Keep in mind that the user can redefine behavior of those operations to whatever seems more reasonable and logical as suitable to the user. The user can also define filters for which items to include and exclude from folder comparison and syncing.

Hex Editor

The hex editor is another feature aimed toward more advance users. The basis of a hex editor is that they display the raw contents of a file. No encoding or translation into text – just the raw binary code for the file. You can use a hex editor to determine a file type if it is unknown, or for editing and debugging an application. Use hex editors with caution as a single incorrect change to the binary data can corrupt the entire file.

Secure Delete

Standard deletions of files and folders are usually recoverable. When you delete a file, it doesn't actually go away. The actual bits remain written on the drive until some other disk activity writes over them. With secure delete, the space where files and folders that will be deleted are overwritten using 1, 7 or 35 passes over the space where it sits. This helps prevent recovering software from successfully recovering deleted files and folders that were not intended to be recovered.

Shelves

In Path Finder, informational panels can be set up with the file manager to display extra information regarding a file. These informational panels are called Shelves. You can set up an Info Shelve that list technical information about a particular file. You can set up a Preview Shelve which shows the preview of your file. A few other shelve examples are for Hex, Attributes, Permissions, Selection Path, Tags and Ratings, and more.

Text & Image Editors

Path Finder comes with a built in text and image editor so you do not have to leave Path Finder. The utilities are basic in nature but convenient for quick modification and editing when needed.

Conclusion

Path Finder is a great file manager alternative to Mac OS' default Finder. It provides many basic features to advance features for all type of users. If you are looking for a file manager to help boost productivity, Path Finder does not fall short of that requirement.
